Pokémon GO for Beginners: How to Get Started and Catch 'Em All

Getting Started with Pokémon GO

Pokémon GO is one of those games that sounds simple until you're actually playing it — and then you realize there's a lot more going on than just tapping on Pokémon. It's an augmented reality game that gets you exploring the real world while building a collection of virtual Pokémon. Whether you're brand new or coming back after a break, this guide covers everything you need to know to hit the ground running.

1. Download and Set Up the Game

First things first: download Pokémon GO from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android). Once it's installed, create an account using your email address, or log in with Google or Facebook if you'd rather keep things simple. Then customize your trainer avatar — it doesn't affect gameplay, but it's a fun way to make the game feel personal — and you're ready to go.

2. Catch Your First Pokémon

When you start the game, Professor Willow walks you through catching your first Pokémon. You'll be given a choice between Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle — the classic trio. But here's a little secret: if you walk away from them four times without choosing, Pikachu will appear as a fourth option. Worth trying if you want to start with something a bit special.

3. Learn the Map and PokéStops

The in-game map mirrors your real-world surroundings, which means actually going outside is the whole point. Blue spinning icons on the map are PokéStops — real-world locations like landmarks, murals, or local businesses. Tap one, spin the photo disc, and you'll collect free items: Poké Balls, potions, berries, and occasionally eggs. Visit them regularly, especially when you're low on supplies.

4. Use Friend Codes to Build Your Network

One of the best things you can do early on is add friends through friend codes. Go to your profile, tap the Friends tab, and share your unique friend code. Once you're connected, friends can send you daily gifts packed with items, join you in raids, and even trade Pokémon. The friendship level system also unlocks XP bonuses over time — so the sooner you start adding people, the better.

5. Join Raids and Battle Gyms

Gyms and raids are central to Pokémon GO's social experience. Gyms let you battle other players' Pokémon to earn in-game coins. Raids are timed cooperative battles against powerful Pokémon — win, and you get a chance to catch the boss. Legendary raids can be tough solo, so coordinate with friends or local players for the best odds of success.

6. Level Up Quickly

To level up faster, focus on three things: catching Pokémon, spinning PokéStops, and completing research tasks. Research tasks (found in the Tasks menu) give you consistent XP and sometimes rare encounters. When you're about to hit a big XP milestone — like evolving a lot of Pokémon at once — pop a Lucky Egg first to double all XP earned for 30 minutes. It makes a noticeable difference.

7. Explore and Have Fun!

Pokémon GO rewards curiosity. The more you walk around, the more you encounter — new Pokémon, more PokéStops, better eggs, and unexpected raid invites. Stay aware of your surroundings (the game will even remind you), meet other players, and enjoy the journey. Catching 'em all is a marathon, not a sprint — and that's what makes it great.
